Chicago-based Uber Freight has entered into what it called an “expanded commercial partnership” with Hillside, Ill.-based Better Trucks, a last-mile delivery platform focused on digital commerce, for tens of millions of packages annually for retail and e-commerce shippers, in addition to making a strategic investment into Better Trucks.

The $387 billion U.S. truckload sector is still stuck in a three-year freight recession, with soft demand, rising bankruptcies, and tariff-driven volatility continuing to weigh on carriers. Yet, amid mergers, bankruptcies, and shifting global trade, leading operators like J.B. Hunt, Knight-Swift, and Werner are adapting business models, pursuing cross-border growth, and investing in efficiencies to weather the downturn.

At CSCMP EDGE, Uber Freight’s Steve Barber shared how the company is applying AI to reshape pricing, operations, and customer engagement—without losing the human touch.

Uber Freight said that since last month Aurora’s self-driving trucks have been completing roundtrip hauls and delivering live commercial freight without a driver behind the wheel, making it the, “first logistics platform to offer commercial freight on public roads with fully driverless Class 8 trucks.”

Chicago-based Uber Freight, an enterprise technology company powering intelligent logistics, with a suite of end-to-end logistics applications, managed services and an expansive carrier network, announced today it has introduced a new offering focused on providing brokers with the ability to digitally book and execute loads on the Uber Freight carrier network—and remain the sole broker on the load.

The company said that these new enhancements mesh what it called seamless final mile capabilities through a strategic integration with Uber Direct, modular TMS functionality, advanced Insights AI features, and flexible procurement software.

Company officials explained that drop and hook services provide various benefits for shippers and carriers, providing flexible transportation solutions for the former, and enhanced efficiency and earnings potential for the latter.

The company said that this business unit now has more than $200 million euro ($218.2 million USD) in freight under management and is on track for $2 billion ($2.18 billion USD) by 2028.

Chicago-based Uber Freight is rolling out a pilot program based on a new scheduled application programing interface (API), which it said will represent the “first activation” of the Scheduling Standards Consortium (SSC) Technical Standard.
