New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy vows to fight New York City’s congestion pricing plan, calling it unfair to New Jersey commuters. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced federal approval of the tolling plan, set to begin January 5. The plan charges $9 for most vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street. Trucks face higher fees, starting at $14.
Murphy criticized the plan for excluding New Jersey from meaningful discussions, stating, “We stand resolutely against a tolling scheme that will unfairly burden our commuters.” He urged New York officials to consider a revenue-sharing deal, saying, “Get us to the table. We’ll come with good intentions.” Murphy also highlighted concerns that the plan will increase traffic and pollution near the George Washington Bridge and surrounding areas.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul defended the plan, citing its reduced toll structure as a way to ease the financial burden on families and small businesses while raising critical funds for the MTA.
