The January shipments reading, at 0.954, fell 8.2% annually and was off 5.3% compared to December. January expenditures, at 2.971, fell 4.2% annually and dropped 4.8% compared to December.

The report’s fourth quarter shipment index value, at 80.1, was down 4.7% compared to the third quarter and was off 15.7% annually. Fourth quarter freight spend, at 182.4, was off 2.2%, from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, and fell 22.0% annually. This was below the 186.6 third quarter reading.

ODFL reported that revenue-per-day fell 8.2 % annually, paced by an 8.0% decrease in daily LTL tonnage, as well as slight decrease in LTL revenue per hundredweight. And it added that the change in daily LTL tonnage was due to a 6.8% decline in LTL shipments per day, as well as a 1.2% decrease in LTL weight per shipment.
