Canada Post workers nationwide went on strike early Friday after over a year of stalled contract negotiations. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), which represents approximately 55,000 employees, said the strike follows more than a year of bargaining with little progress on key issues, including fair wages, safer working conditions, and job security.
In a statement, CUPW said, “Canada Post had the opportunity to prevent this strike, but it has refused to negotiate real solutions to the issues postal workers face every day. Instead, Canada Post left us no choice when it threatened to change our working conditions and leave our members exposed to layoffs.”
The timing of the strike—just ahead of Black Friday and the holiday season—could significantly impact Canadians who rely on the postal service for packages, gifts, and cards. Canada Post confirmed that mail and parcels would not be processed or delivered during the strike, and some post offices will be closed. It also warned that operations may take time to return to normal once the strike ends.
