Small U.S. businesses are staring down a massive new expense — about $202 billion a year — because of President Trump’s new tariffs. The estimate comes from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which says these duties will hit companies with fewer than 500 workers especially hard. On average, each small importer will pay roughly $856,000 more a year.
For many of these businesses, there’s not much room in the budget to absorb higher costs. That means prices for everyday goods could climb as companies pass some of the pain on to customers.
“These tariffs are essentially a tax on American businesses and consumers,” the Chamber said in a statement.
