Thousands of Amazon workers walked off the job early Thursday morning in what the Teamsters union calls the biggest strike against the company in U.S. history. Workers at seven Amazon facilities in cities like New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are demanding the retail giant negotiate a collective-bargaining contract. The strike comes during the peak holiday shopping season.
“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible.”
The Teamsters, which represents about 10,000 Amazon employees and contractors, set a Dec. 15 deadline for Amazon to meet at the bargaining table. The union said Amazon ignored the request, leading workers to demand higher pay, better benefits, and improved working conditions.
